 BRHMS needs your help

Bow River Handbell Musicians Society is comprised of multiple performance groups that provide musicians of all experience levels an opportunity to share in this unique musical art form. Currently, this is possible due to the generosity of the Chris Akkerman School and Knox United Church in Calgary, who let us borrow their 3-octave sets of handbells and chimes to use in our rehearsals and performances. We are eternally grateful to them, as we simply could not exist without their generosity.

Now that our groups have gotten established and as BRHMS moves toward being registered as a non-profit organization in Alberta, we are setting our sights on the purchase of our own set of handbells and chimes to expand our ability to bring the musical arts to more people and to secure permanent access to this wonderful instrument.

Unfortunately, handbells are expensive. Each bell is cast individually in bronze, then goes through a specialized, complex process to insure that it rings exactly the right pitch with the proper overtones. It’s a time-consuming and very specialized process - so specialized, in fact, that only three companies in the world currently craft handbells. Here’s a short video from the television program “How It’s Made” that shows how Malmark Inc makes their instrument.

To raise the funds needed to purchase our bells, we will be launching Adopt-A-Bell and Legacy Bell programs in the near future.

Adopt-A-Bell: Choose one of the 61 handbells in the set or an octave of chimes and “buy” it with your donation. We will include your name or a short dedication on the inside of that bell’s handle, assuring that your generosity will be rung out for many years to come.

Legacy Bell: Choose one of the 61 handbells in the set or an octave of chimes and “buy” it with your donation in memory of a loved one. We will include the name of your loved one and a short dedication on the inside of that bell’s handle, keeping their memory alive with every ring.

Once BRHMS has been approved of its non-profit status, we will kick off our fundraising. If you would like to be notified when that happens, or if you’d like to be informed about upcoming concerts and events, please fill in your email address and click SUBSCRIBE.
